What Is Home Automation?

Reese_homeautomation.jpgHome automation refers to the automatic and electronic control of household features, activity, and appliances. Various control systems are utilized in this residential extension of building automation.

Home automation is a way that all of our devices and appliances can be networked together to provide us with a seamless control over all aspects of our home and more. With home automation, you dictate how a device should react, when it should react, and why it should react. You program the schedule and the rest is automated and based off of your personal preferences thus providing convenience, control, money savings, and an overall smarter home.

The other main characteristic of cutting-edge home automation is remote monitoring and access.  You can check your security system's status, whether the lights are on, whether the doors are locked, what the current temperature of your home is and much more. Home automation can also alert you to events that you might want to know about right-away while you are gone like water leaks and unexpected access to your home, or any part of it. At any time, you can grab your iPhone, Android device or other remote control and change the settings in your house as desired.

One advantage of home automation is the potential for energy savings and cost savings. Your thermostat is already "smart" in the sense that it uses a temperature threshold to govern the home's heating and cooling system. In most cases, thermostats can also be programmed with different target temperatures in order to keep energy usage at a minimum during the hours when you're least likely to benefit from the heating and cooling.
